When Russian forces invaded Ukraine, they shut down Ukrainian internet services and tried to block social media.
In response, Elon Musk made Starlink’s service available in Ukraine. So far, around 15,000 sets of dishes and routers have been shipped to the country to help people stay connected.
Chris Hall says that Starlink has been used to keep public services and the government running, and the Russians have not been able to disable it.
Additionally, Ukrainian forces have used the service to communicate on the battlefield, where its signals cannot be jammed like traditional radio signals can be, and the equipment can be set up quickly.
Starlink is not the only company that has placed satellites in low-Earth orbit (LEO) in order to provide internet services.
Amazon is also planning to launch thousands of its Kuiper satellites into LEO, and OneWeb has already deployed satellites in this orbit. However, the deployment of so many satellites in LEO raises concerns about the potential for increased space debris or “space clutter”.
When satellites collide, they can create fragments of wreckage that can cause further damage when flying at high speeds. There have already been several close encounters between Starlink satellites and other objects in space, including China’s space station.
If there are too many fragments in LEO, it could become difficult to use in the future, and it may even be difficult to reach higher orbits where navigational and telecom satellites are located.
